Smardan Supply was established on March 1st, 1930, during the Great Depression by brothers Bill and Sam Smardan, who previously worked at Silvers Pipe & Supply. Their first location was in a disused automobile garage in Inglewood, CA. Their initial employee was a driver named Bill Weelo, who part-paid his wages by lodging at Bill Smardan's home.

In 1948, Charlie Hatcher, manager of Grabler Mallable Co., partnered with the Smardan brothers to start a business in Santa Barbara, forming Smardan-Hatcher Co. Tragically, Charlie passed away in 1951, leading the Smardan brothers to assume full control. Despite opening Smardan-Hatcher Salinas in 1953, it closed in 1955 due to challenging economic conditions.

In 1949, Sam Benton, Bill's son-in-law, joined the business, eventually becoming a shareholder in 1960 by acquiring the Santa Barbara branch. Over the years, under Sam's leadership, Smardan-Hatcher Corp. expanded to six branches.

The original Smardan Supply branch relocated from the garage in Inglewood, to a 2-acre facility in Gardena, CA. Additional branches were later established in Fountain Valley, Burbank, San Luis Obispo, and El Monte as more family members got involving in the business.

about page 3

In the mid to late seventies, Randy Benton (Sam's son) and Rick Leoff entered the business playing a vital role in the growth of the company. Today, Randy Benton serves as the companies CEO. In the late 90's, Rick's sons Brandon (Santa Barbara) and Justin (Gardena) joined the company after graduating college and in 2008, Randy's son AJ (Fountain Valley) also entered the business after graduating college.

As our family’s very capable fourth generation, Brandon, Justin, and AJ are all very excited to serve as Co-Presidents of Smardan Supply. It has always been our promise to ourselves to make our customers, vendors and employees feel like they are part of the Smardan family. Service, inventory, relationships and competitive prices are the pillars that have allowed Smardan, not only to survive for nearly 100 years, but to indeed thrive in the extremely competitive Southern California market.
